AAACC Family & Friends Fall Picnic  

 

Our Family and Friends Fall Picnic will be held at the Autism Project in Owings, Maryland on Saturday, September 11th starting at 2 PM.   We're planning a scavenger hunt for the kids, pumpkin decorating, water balloon competition and other events.  The AAACC will provide hamburgers and hotdogs, related fixins’ and soft drinks.   Be sure to bring a side dish, or dessert to share. 

So come on out, relax and enjoy this opportunity to share some good times with your family and AAACC friends in a relaxing and understanding environment.  And please let us know if you can help out with running some games for the kids, selling raffle tickets, cooking, or cleaning up.

THE COMMISSION ON AUTISM was formed in 2009 by the Maryland General Assembly (SB 963) to begin charting new statewide approaches to health, education and employment services for children, adults and families of Marylanders with autism spectrum disorders.  The Southern Maryland meeting is one of four meetings that the Commission is holding throughout the State of Maryland to receive public input regarding the needs of individuals and families facing autism.

PUBLIC COMMENTS:  There will be an opportunity for public comment from 11:30 to 12:30.  Please limit your presentation to three minutes and provide a written copy of your comments to the Commission.

How to Use Visual Schedules to Support Children with ASD

 

 

SPEAKER:  Paul Livelli, Ph.D.

 

 

Dr. Livelli is an educational consultant for families and school systems in Maryland and Virginia . He also serves as a research associate for the University of Maryland in College Park where he teaches courses on autism, classroom management, and social communication.  During his twenty year career, Dr. Livelli has also served as vocational coordinator and special education program supervisor for students with autism in the Sheppard Pratt Health System.

Friendship and Dating for Young People on the Autism Spectrum

 

    

SPEAKER:  Angela Gaither-Parker

 

Ms. Gaither-Parker is the Director of The Autism Project located in Calvert County, Maryland.  She has an MS in Special Education from Johns Hopkins University and a BS in Psychology and Physical Education from Virginia Tech.  She has worked with children, youth and young adults on the autism spectrum for over ten years.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

 

 

 

SPEAKER:  Melanie Lohwater, OTR/L

                    Director, Personalized Therapy, LLC

 

Ms. Lohwater is a licensed occupational therapist.   After years of working in a variety of clinical settings, she decided to create an environment where patients of all ages and therapeutic needs could come together in Southern Maryland.  In August, 1996 Personalized Therapy opened its doors in California, MD.  Personalized Therapy, LLC recently opened another clinic in Prince Frederick, in association with Barstow Acres Children's Center.   

Ms. Lohwater will be sharing information about the services at the center, which include OT, PT, and social skills groups. 

We will also hold our annual election of officers and members of the AAACC Board of Directors.  All voting members in good standing may participate and vote in the election either by voting online or in person.  Please consider serving the families of children with autism in our community by running for an office, or for the Board of Directors.  We value your opinions and ideas, and welcome the addition of new leaders. 

 

THE MEETING IS FREE OF CHARGE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
