  AAACC Family and Friends Fall Picnic

 

Our Family and Friends Fall Picnic will be held at the Shores of Calvert Riverfront picnic area in Dunkirk on Saturday, September 26 starting at 3 PM.   We're planning a chili cook-off contest, scavenger hunts for the kids, pumpkin decorating, apple bobbing and other events.  The AAACC will provide hamburgers and hotdogs, related fixins’, and soft drinks.   Be sure to enter the chili cook-off contest, or bring a side dish or dessert to share. 

So come on out, relax and enjoy this opportunity to share some good times with your family and AAACC friends in a relaxing and understanding environment.  And please let us know if you can help out with running some games for the kids, selling raffle tickets, cooking, or cleaning up.

Dr. Lauren Kenworthy is well known in the Washington region for her thorough neuropsychological assessments and her comprehensive recommendations for educational strategies for students with autism. 

 

When Dr. Angela Bollich joined the Children’s National Medical Center autism spectrum disorders team a few years ago, she brought not only her training as a neuropsychologist, but also her expertise as a speech and language pathologist.  Dr. Bollich is now offering services, including assessment services for children and teens with autism and related neuro-developmental disorders, to Upper Marlboro, MD.

 

Drs. Kenworthy and Bollich will present approaches and practical strategies to identifying and educating students on the autism spectrum that will be helpful to parents and teachers alike.

SPEAKER:   Angela Gaither-Parker, Director

                      The Autism Project

 

TOPIC:  Ms. Gaither-Parker has been the Director of The Autism Project for over ten years.  She has an MS in Special Education from Johns Hopkins University , and a BS in Psychology and Physical Education from Virginia Tech.  Her topics will cover the individual, group and family services provided at the center, and the lessons learned from serving the autism community.  The Autism Project currently serves 65 children and youth of all ages, ranging across the entire spectrum of abilities. 

 

When the AAACC invited Ms. Gaither-Parker to be our speaker, she offered to host our group at the new Autism Project Center , and we gladly accepted.

Ms. Hinds, a registered nurse and clinical psychotherapist, is the founder and Executive Director of Barstow Acres Children Center in Prince Frederick, Maryland.  Barstow Acres Children Center offers individual therapy for children, adolescents and adults for issues related to anger, divorce, grief and loss, autism, ADHD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, selective mutism, behavior management, depression and other related issues.  Barstow Acres also offers group therapy, social skills training, family therapy and parent coaching.  Therapy for children is child-centered and utilizes a Gestalt approach.

Getting the Services Your Child Needs

now that Rolling Access Funds are Gone

TOPIC:  There has been a big change in funding for services for those who need less than critical intervention services.  Last fall, the Rolling Access program was cancelled.  Funding will now come through a new program called Low Intensity Support Services, and there are some changes to the application process.  Our speakers can answer your questions about what services are available to your children, and how you can obtain funding to help you meet some of those costs.  Our speakers will include:

SPECIAL EDUCATION LAW & YOUR CHILD'S IEP

 

 

SPEAKER:  Mark Martin, Esq.

 

TOPIC:  Mark Martin is an attorney who specializes in special education law.  Mr. Martin will present strategies and advice related to the identification and provision of appropriate educational services to children with disabilities.  The presentation will include understanding eligibility requirements, effective advocacy strategies for ensuring your child receives the education to which they are entitled and your rights as a parent of child who has or is suspected having a disability.

 

Mr. Martin represents individuals and families throughout Maryland and has many years of experience in litigating special education, juvenile delinquency, criminal and civil rights cases.  Before entering private practice, Mr. Martin was the litigation director of the Public Justice Center , a non-profit organization in Baltimore , Maryland , where he managed and litigated class action and other high impact cases involving children's rights and civil rights.
